  • ガンディーのジェンダー論:エコロジカル・フェミニズムとの関連において
    日本学術振興会:科学研究費助成事業
    Date (from‐to) : 2020/04 -2023/03
    Author :

  • A Historical Origin of Indian Democracy: B. R. Ambedkar's Thought Around the Period of Independence and the Influence of John Dewey

This study attempts to establish a historical source of Indian democracy by examining the influence of John Dewey in the development of the thought of B. R. Ambedkar. After his study at Colombia University, Ambedkar repeatedly acknowledged his intellectual debts to Dewey's ideas on democracy, education and society. On the other hand, Ambedkar developed his own vision of Indian history and society, by which to set the agenda for Indian democracy. He applied Dewey's concept of associated living, to argue for the historical specificity of the caste system and condemn the anti-social behavior, especially against the Dalits. He asserted that such a social relationship was not inherent in India. Although the development of associational life remained weak till long after his death, it is clear today that the increasingly active participation of backward castes and Dalits in the spheres of education and politics has become one of the main characteristics of Indian democracy.
  • Gandhi's Vision of Nation: With his View of Hindu-Muslim Unity
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science:Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research
    Date (from‐to) : 2012/04 -2015/03
    Author : ISHII Kazuya

This research was an attempt to analyze how Gandhi endeavored to establish the communal unity between Hindu and Muslim, the largest and second largest religious groups, in their pursuit of independence, under the British policy of "devide and rule". Gandhi expected Indian people to respect each other's faith beyond their religious difference. His vision of nation was therefore understood to be different from those of western counterparts Hobbes and Locke, and Reuseau, who contributed to shape the images of nation in modern era.

We conducted research on M. K. Gandhi through group meetings for reading the text, as well as by archival and field research, including Ahmedabad and Wardha in India, the British Library in the U. K. and Durban in South Africa, and were able to show aspects of the role he played in history.

  • Mahatma Gandhi's Views on Caste : Between Tradition and Modernity
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science:Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research
    Date (from‐to) : 2008 -2010
    Author : ISHII Kazuya

Mahatma Gandhi tended to support caste system and therefore severely conflicted Bhimrao Ambedkar, an untouchable, while he drew a clear line with Hindu sanatanists, who considered untouchability necessary for Hindu society. As this indicates his views on caste belong neither to modernity nor tradition, this research aims to analyze his thought in such context. The idea of vanrashram dharma that he educed from caste system stipulates that people inherit their ancestors' occupation, which could be reevaluated as a critique of modernism and postmodernism that would approve of limitless expansion of desire.
  • Religious Thought and Principles of Mahatma Gandhi
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science:Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research
    Date (from‐to) : 2006 -2007
    Author : ISHII Kazuya

The main purpose of this research project is to investigate how Mahatma Gandhi formed his principles such as ahimsa (non-killing), satya (truth), asteya (non-possession), brahmacharya (continence) and aparigraha (non-possession) under the influence of Hinduism, Buddhism Jainism and Christianity As them principles clearly oppose modern values like self-interest and materialism, it is important for us to understand Gandhi's religious thought in light of Max Weber's concepts of "weltfluchitige Kontemplation" and "innerweltliche Askese". Weber observed types of "weltfluchitige Kontemplation" in these Indian religions and that of "innerweltliche Askese" in Christianity, especially Protestantism, and concluded that it was only the West that could bare capitalism where rational attitudes of life stemmed from "innerweltliche Askese". Gandhi extracted elements from thirsts four religions, but his thought is unique since it does not completely fall into any of those types that Weber mined. Gandhi dun did contemplation, but unlike a Hindu, a Buddhist or a Jain ever remained in a worldly life to tackle actual sociopolitical problems. He remained in a worldly lie, but unlike a Protestant did not really pursue "rational attitude of life". His principles would rather welcome a person to control his or her want and live simple with the sense of love, in order for him to find-to borrow Margaret Chatterjee's terminology-a "hope for the future of the human family". While a paper (Ishii, 2008) constitutes the main part of the research result, two related papers (Ishii, 2007a: Ishii, 2007b) were also published, one of which (Ishii, 2007a) was presented at an annual conference of the Japanese Association for South Asian Studies in October 2007.
