    既存の太陽電池では、p-n接合やショットキー接合界面での局所的な内部電界を利用して光キャリアの生成・輸送を行っているため、開放電圧は半導体のバンドギャップや正負両電極の仕事関数の差に制限され、開放電圧は最大でも0.8 V程度である。 本研究課題では強誘電性液晶にπ電子共役系を組み込んだ「液晶性強誘電半導体」を合成し、強誘電相におけるバルク光起電力効果を見出している。自発分極によって内部電場がバルク全体に発生し、それによって光キャリアの生成・輸送が起こり、光起電力が発生する。そのため、原理的にはバンドギャップをはるかに超える大きな起電力が発生しうる。通常の有機薄膜太陽電池と異なり、正負両電極は同じITO電極を使用でき、ポーリング電界を反転させることにより、電池の極性を反転させることもできる。強誘電性セラミックスと異なり、コーティングや印刷法によるデバイス作製にも適している。 2021年度は、双極子モーメントの大きなフルオロ基やカルボニル基を導入した液晶性強誘電半導体とフラーレン誘導体の混合物に着目した。高温側の常誘電性の液晶相において直流電圧を印加して強誘電相に冷却すると、分極した強誘電相が出現する。強誘電相では、液晶相中でフラーレン誘導体が数μm程度の大きさの微結晶を形成する。液晶/フラーレン微結晶界面で効率的に光キャリアが生成するため、近紫外-青色域での外部量子収率は70%を超える。また、強誘電相での強い内部電界により、開放電圧は1.2 Vに達する。通常の太陽電池と異なり、正負両電極に化学的に安定なITO電極を使用でき、不安定なCa電極は不要である。その他にも、強誘電相での高い誘電率が光キャリアの生成を促進している可能性、強誘電相での内部電界が電極面でのホール・電子注入障壁を低減している可能性が示唆された。
  • Construction and investgation of carbon nitride based polymer nanosheets for separation membranes

    In this research, membranes composed of photocatalytic carbon nitrides nanosheets or their mimetic polymers were prepared for the application of separation membranes such as reverse osmosis membranes. The preparations of the nanosheets of carbon nitrides (including polyheptazine imide) with large areas were achieved by the control of synthetic temperature and the hydrothermal treatment. However, since the layered structures of carbon nitride nanosheets were not stable in the aqueous solution due to their hydrophilicity, it is found that the stabilization of the membranes by intermolecular interactions such as electrostatic interaction is required. Further, the syntheses of mimetic polymers of carbon nitrides have been attempted for stable membranes composed of carbon nitride derivatives. As the result, the oligomers consisting of alkyl chains and melem, which is the monomer unit of carbon nitrides, were synthesized and their chemical structures were confirmed by NMR.

  • Preparation of graphene oxide-carbon nitrides hybrid membranes for desalination

    Reverse osmosis (RO) membranes consisted of two-dimensional materials, such as graphene and graphene oxide (GO), have attracted increased attention in seawater desalination. In this research, various hybrid membranes consisted of GO and carbon nitride (CN; which is known as a photocatalyst with 2D nanosheet) have been prepared and their water permeability from saline water have been also investigated. The GO-CN hybrid membranes by electrostatic interaction were thinner and more stable in saline water than other GO and GO-CN hybrid membranes, and the lowest ion permeation were achieved. These results might be due to low void space between GO layers and CN layers for nanosheet structures and intermolecular interaction by the ionization.
  • Precision control methodology of primary structures of necklace shaped element block polymers

    In this research, we aimed to develop the methodologies to produce elemental block polymers. As a model molecule of element block, a bifunctional POSS(Polyhedral Oligomeric SilSesquioxanes)molecule was focused. The polymerization methodologies to produce the series of necklace shaped element block polymers, in which a “hard and bulky” POSS unit and a “soft” oligo-dimethylsiloxane were alternately connected, have reported. In addition, the primary structure of the polymers was controlled precisely. Furthermore, the correlation between the necklace type polymer and basic polymer physical properties was investigated.

    Colorful p-conjugated nanofilms with unique mesostructures formed spontaneously on hydrophobic substrates from aqueous solutions in the presence of simple aromatic building block molecules under ambient conditions. We thus report the results of surface-mediated polycondensation and chemical liquid deposition. The Schiff base coupling reaction applied for this soft solution process is a dynamic reversible covalent coupling reaction that can be managed by careful changes in solution conditions based on adsorption and polymerization equilibria. This low-cost and eco-friendly bottom-up method allows great diversity in terms of the design of primary polymeric chemical structures by the selection of building blocks without the need to consider the solubility of the polymer. This paves the way to a true bottom-up assembly of a vast array of solid-supported, designer supramolecular nanoarchitectures with potential use as functional materials for next-generation organic electronics.

    Heptazine derivatives are candicates as building blocks for functional nano-architectures, because of the monomers of graphitic carbon nitrides as metal-free photocatalysts. In this research, we found the ordered self-assembled structures of melem monocation at the aqueous solution–Au(111) interface. In addition, the adsorbed structures of cyamerulate anions were formed at the aqueous solution–Au(111) interface, and EC-STM revealed that the structures were stable under the electrochemical potential control.
