In recent years, adhesive joint has been used in a mechanical field due to developing of adhesives, however the bonding strength and the reliability of the bonding strength is weaker than mechanical fastening. In this study, the tensile strength of single lap joint was measured in order to investigate the influence of various surface texturing and a surface treatment. Specimens consist of aluminum alloy plates (A6061). Nd: YAG laser and Vickers indenter were used to process the difference texturing shape. Also large-area electron beam (EB) was used for surface treatment. Each one of specimens were examined from the view of wettability and anchor effect. Compared with Non-treated, other joints were confirmed to improve the tensile strength, especially the joint that was irradiated Nd: YAG laser and large-area EB was the largest strength and improved about 75%. Under the condition of EB irradiation, the tensile strength was increased due to improved adhesive strength of interface. In addition, the anchor effect of adhesive surface was sufficiently developed by improving adhesive strength. Therefore, it is considered that the condition with applying texturing and the EB irradiation was improved the tensile strength of adhesive surface most.

In design of bolted joints, it is important to understand bolt axial tensions to avoid joint loosening. In recent years, FEM models with three dimensional threads have been applied to analyze mechanical characteristics of bolted joints. In this paper, tightening experiments, elastic FEM analyses and simplified calculations were conducted for bolted joints which consist of two hollow discs tightened by a hexagonal bolt with flange and a hexagonal nut with flange in order to obtain relationships among rotation angle θ [°], bolt axial tension F [kN] and tightening torque T [Nm]. As the results, it was shown that the relationships between the rotation angle θ [°] and bolt axial tension F [kN] obtained by FEM analyses with three dimensional thread have good agreement with the experimental results in a range of an initial tightening, which has non-linear relationship between the rotation angle θ [°] and bolt axial tension F [kN]. After tightening the nuts and bolts until rundown condition, the relationships become linear in both experiments and FEM analyses. However, the values of bolt axial tensions obtained by FEM analyses are a little higher than experimental ones at a same rotation angle. Also, stress distributions of the bolted joints are revealed.

Since a scatter in axial bolt force exists in assembling the pipe flange connections, it is important to understand the behavior of scatter in axial bolt force of pipe flange connection. In this study, the bolt tightening tests with torque control method (tightening procedure: ASME PCC-1) were done to investigate the behavior of axial bolt force in pipe flange connection with 20 inches nominal diameter with Ring Joint Gasket. The obtained results on the standard deviation in axial bolt force were compared with that of the nut factor measured before bolt tightening. As a result, it is found that the experimentally obtained standard deviation in axial bolt force as assembled was correlated strongly with standard deviation of nut factor.

WATANABE Tadatoshi; OMIYA Yuya; FUJII Masahiro
The Proceedings of Mechanical Engineering Congress, Japan  2018  The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers

To investigate the trend of bolt force degradation, an experimental and FEM analytical approaches had been conducted. Experiment conditions were as temperature of tightened specimen at 130deg for 200 hours. The transition of axial bolt force during the experiment was recorded. Specimen was composed by steel bolt, clamped part and female thread part which made by steel or aluminum alloy. As experimental results, it is found that axial bolt force degrades logarithmically. This transition is the influence of creep behavior of material. Degradation range is greater in case with aluminum parts than in case with steel parts. And especially material of female thread part has much influence than that of clamped part. From FEM analysis, creep strain observed at female thread and bearing surface of bolt flange.

In developing new car, the weight reduction is important issue. As one of solutions, the application of light weight materials is considerable. In the case, the bolted joints with dissimilar materials are sometimes needed. When the bolted joints are suffering from temperature change, they are deformed and the stress distributions occur, because each clamped part has different coefficient of linear thermal expansion. And the sliding forces also occur on the contact surfaces. In this study, those are analyzed by elasto-plastic FEM calculations for the different shape bolted joints. They consist of the aluminum specimen, the steel plate and four bolts. Different stress distributions and sliding forces are shown and discussed.

In order to examine the sealing mechanism of a connection with a metal gasket, the sealing test according to JIS B2490 and FEM analysis were carried out. The dimensions of platen used in the test are according to JIS B 2490 and the metal gasket types are chosen as metal flat and ring joint gasket. The material of the gaskets was aluminum. The ring joint gasket types are chosen as octagonal and oval. The effect of internal pressure on the sealing performance of connection with the metal flat gaskets was measured. The relationship between the gasket compression stress and amount of leakage through inter faces on the metal flat gasket was obtained. And also, the relationship between compression load and amount of leakage through inter faces on the ring joint gaskets was obtained. The von Mises stress distributions on the interface on the metal gaskets were calculated using FEM. Using the results of sealing test and FEM, it was suggested that the sealing performance was improved, when the von Mises stress more than the gaskets material of the yield stress adequately. Furthermore, it was suggested experimentally that the ratio of the maximum of von Mises stress in the gaskets material of yield stress was 1.015.

MOROZUMI Yukio; OMIYA Yuya; FUJII Masahiro
The Proceedings of Mechanical Engineering Congress, Japan  2015  The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers

Recently it is important to reduce the car weight for fuel consumption improvement. One of the solutions is to exchange materials from steel to light weight materials. In this case, the bolted joints with dissimilar materials sometimes are needed. When temperature change occurs on the bolted joints, expansions of two clamped parts are different due to different coefficient of linear thermal expansion. And that causes the sliding force on the contact surface between two clamped parts. In this study, the deformations and the stress distributions under temperature change are analyzed by FEM for the bolted joints that consist of the rectangular aluminum plate, the steel plate and two bolts. Finally, comparisons in the sliding force between the simplified calculations by the spring models and FEM analyses are conducted for several dimensions of the plates.

Plain washers are used to increase the area of the bearing surfaces in bolted joints. It was investigated that even if the average contact stress between a washer and a clamped part was the same, a thinner washer showed larger plastic deformation at the bearing surfaces after the bolt tightening. It is thought that this is because the real contact area decreases due to the warp of the plain washer. In this paper, mean permanent sets w^^- at the bearing surfaces are calculated based on elasto-plastic FEM analyses for several bolt sizes of the hexagon head bolted joints with plain washers. The deflection parameter k_w is proposed to introduce as a equation for calculating the mean permanent set by hand easily, and it is shown that the proposed method is effective to determine appropriate thickness of a plain washer.

Bolted flange connections with ring joint gaskets have been used to seal the inner fluid under higher internal pressure and higher temperature conditions where soft gaskets such as compressed sheet gaskets cannot be applied. Bolted flange connections are frequently tightened using torque wrench, and it is known that the values of bolt preloads are scattered. The effect of the scatter on the sealing performance for bolted flange connections with compressed sheet gasket or semi-metal gasket has been examined. However, no research on the characteristics for the bolted flange connections with ring joint gasket has been carried out. It is necessary to know the effect of the scattered bolt preloads on the sealing performance and mechanical behavior of the connection with ring joint gasket. In addition, it is important to know an optimum method for determining the bolt preloads taking account of the scatter in bolt preloads. In this paper, leakage tests for bolted flange connections with octagonal ring joint gaskets were conducted for cases where the bolt preloads are uniform and scattered. The sealing performance of these connections with ring joint gaskets was measured and evaluated. In addition, the leak rate was estimated using the contact gasket stress distributions of the connections when the bolt preloads were uniform and scattered using 3-D FEM. Finally, the measured leak rate for the connection using helium gas was compared with the estimated results. The estimated results are in fairly good agreement with the measured values. It is found that the sealing performance of the connections tightened with the uniform bolt methods is better than that with scattered bolt preloads.

The effect of the plain washer's thickness on the contact stress distributions and the plastic displacements (permanent set) at the bearing surfaces are analyzed using elasto-plastic FEM analyses in case of the initial bolt clamping state. It is found that the contact stress and the plastic deformation decrease as the thickness of washer increases. It is shown that the plastic displacements at the bearing surfaces in case of hexagon bolts with flanges are smaller than in case of hexagon head bolts. Also even if the average contact stress is the same at the bearing surface, the plastic displacements are smaller in case of smaller bolt holes of clamped parts.

Pipe flange connections have been widely used in mechanical structures such as power, chemical plants and so on. Sometimes leakage accidents occur from the connections. In assembling the pipe flange connections, the bolt preloads are scattered and then the connections are subjected to external bending moment due to earthquakes as well as internal pressure. In the present paper, the changes in the axial bolt forces are measured in assembling. The bolts are tightened with torque wrench. Using the history of the axial bolt force changes and FEM calculation the gasket stress distribution is estimated. The amount of leakage of the connection was measured. It is found that the effect of the scatter of bolt preload is substantial on the sealing performance of the connections. And it is found that the effect of the scatter of bolt preload and the effect of bending moment can be added. The changes in axial bolt forces obtained from experimental result are in a fairly good agreement with FEM result.

Bolted connections with gasket such as box-shaped flange connections have been widely used in mechanical structures, such as nuclear and chemical industry, and so on. They are usually used under internal pressure. The high sealing performance of flange connection is required to avoid the unexpected leakage accident. The two methods, which are Diagonal and Clock-wised, are used in the bolts tightening procedure for the pipe flange connection. The effects of the difference between Diagonal and Clock-wised method on the sealing performance of pipe flange connection have been examined. In this paper, the contact gasket stresses of these connections under internal pressure are analyzed using the finite element method (FEM) of each bolting procedure, taking into account a hysteresis in the stress-displacement curve of a gasket. And then, using the contact gasket stress distributions obtained from FE analysis and the relationship between gasket stress and leak rate obtained from a gasket sealing test, a method for estimating an amount of leakage is examined. The leakage tests were also conducted to measure an amount of gas leakage using an actual box-shape flange connection with the gasket. In addition, the effect of bolt spacing is examined on the sealing performances of box-shape flange connections under internal pressure. The effects of the above factors are discussed on the sealing performance in designing box-shape flange connections.

It has been well known that a scatter in axial bolt forces in pipe flange connections tightened by the torque control method is substantial. In practice, pipe flange connections with the larger nominal diameter tightened by the torque control method have been used in chemical industry, and so on. In some study, the characteristics of the connections with smaller nominal diameter (less than 8") have been examined. So, in an optimum design of pipe flange connections with gaskets, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of the pipe flange connections with large nominal diameter under internal pressure and the contact gasket distributions due to the scatter in axial bolt forces in the connections tightened by the torque control method. In this paper, the experimental and FE analyses were done to evaluate the effect of scatter in axial bolt force on the gasket stress distribution and the sealing performance of pipe flange connections with 20" nominal diameter. Two types of torque controlled assembling procedures and an effect of scatter in the axial bolt forces obtained from the above methods is examined. Then, the effect of scatter in the axial bolt forces on the sealing performance of the connection is evaluated. The contact stress distribution in the larger pipe flange connection with 20" nominal diameter under internal pressure is analyzed using FEM by taking into account a non-linearity and a hysteresis. The measured scatter in the axial bolt forces is applied in the FEM calculations.

Since an external bending moment affected the sealing performance of pipe flange connection, it was important to investigate this effect. This paper analyzed the contact gasket stress distribution of pipe flange connections and evaluated the effect of external bending moment on the sealing performance from the viewpoint of changes in contact gasket stress. The study included the FE analyses and the experimental leakage tests. The FE analyses revealed the large decrease of contact gasket stress at tension side and small increase at compression side. The difference in change in contact gasket stress was caused by the non-linear hysterics characteristics of stress-displacement curve of gasket. The FE analyses also revealed that the loading order, internal pressure and external bending moment, also affected the sealing performance due to the non-linear deformation characteristic of the gasket. The experimental leakage tests using helium (He) gas were analyzed by the finite element method and discussed. This paper also evaluated the stress distribution in the pipe flange under external bending moment. The results suggested that the hub stress dominated the flange structure and the most important factor in designing the flange.

The authors have been evaluating the effects of the material properties of spiral wound gaskets(SWG) and the sealing performance of the pipe flange connections at thermal changes with numerical and experimental analysis. In this experiment we used 3" pipe flange connections and tightened by torque wrench. And then, we heated and measured leak volume. On the other hand we evaluated with the experimental leakage test and 3-D FE analysis in this study. Considering the circumstances mentioned above, we inspected stress analysis under scatter on bolt preloads and thermal changes.

Recently, the emission control of harmful substances emitted from chemical plants have become stricter worldwide. High sealing performance is required for pipe joints. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the nano-leakage mechanism that occurs on the surface of metal gaskets. The purpose of this study is to clarify the compression deformation behavior at the surface and Nano leakage mechanism of the metal seal gasket. As a result, the deformation of the protruding peaks, cores, and protruding valleys that form the roughness of the metal surface showed different behaviors depending on the hardness difference of the metal and the compressive load. In addition, the valleys remained at the outer of the gasket as the initial surface roughness of the gasket was increased. It was shown that there is a relationship between the residual amount of valley and Nano leak.

In this study, metal oxide nanoparticles were synthesized using wood with various metals and synthesis conditions. Moreover, frictional properties of the metal oxide nanoparticles dispersed in lubricating oil were investigated. When iron oxide nanoparticles and copper oxide nanoparticles were synthesized and dispersed in lubricating oil, both were improved in frictional properties compared to lubricating oil without the additives. The synthesized metal particles included amorphous carbon, thus they were heated in air to remove the amorphous carbon. In the case of copper oxide nanoparticles, it was found that the particle size became larger with increasing heating time. In the case of friction tests at room temperature, a sufficient reduction effect was obtained with an addition amount of more than 2 mass%. This is probably because a tribofilm of copper was formed on the substrate by the copper oxide nanoparticles when the addition amount was sufficient.

In order to prevent fatigue fractures by repeated stress, hardness of contact materials have been increased. However it is not sufficient. In this study, we carried out to improve fatigue life using dispersing graphene oxide in lubricating oil. Dispersion methods of graphene oxide in lubricating oil and rolling tester with minimum lubricating oils were developed. Improvement of fatigue life was achieved by the dispersing graphene oxide in the lubricating oil. However, formation of tribofilm which seems to greatly improve fatigue life was not achieved. In the future, in order to achieve further improvement of fatigue life, we will discover dispersants that will improve formation of tribofilms.
