GIACO searches solutions using the pheromone of ACO and the genetic information of GA. In addition, the ant which cannot trail the pheromone is caused by the mutation. We apply GIACO to Traveling Salesman Problems (TSPs) and confirm that GIACO obtains more effective results than the conventional ACO and the conventional GA.

In this paper, we present a new application of radial basis adaptive resonance theory Maps (RB-ARTMAP) to classification problems. The RB-ARTMAP can classify a set of analog input data by circle-shaped categories. The RB-ARTMAP uses a new distance that measures the similarities of an input and categories. The RB-ARTMAP has an simpler learning algorithm than other ART systems. Using basic three benchmarks, we have confirmed that our algorithm is competitive at classification function with Fuzzy-ARTMAP and support vector machine (SVM).

The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is unsupervised neural networks introduced by Kohonen. The SOM attracts attentions for clustering in these years. In the previous study, we have proposed the Lazy Self-Organizing Map (LSOM), whose learning rate depends on only each neuron's character. Meanwhile, the learning rate of the conventional SOM depends on learning step. We investigated its behaviors, however, we confirmed that the previous LSOM tend to obtain effective map reflecting the distribution state of the input data and a strongly twist map than the conventional SOM. In this study, we propose an improved LSOM, whose learning rate depends on each neuron's character, lazy-neuron rate and decreases according to learning step. We apply the improved LSOM considering lazy-neuron rate to various input data set and confirm its behaviors and effectiveness.

The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is a famous algorithm for the unsupervised learning and visualization introduced by Teuvo Kohonen. This study proposes the Lazy Self-Organizing Map (LSOM) algorithm which reflects the world of worker ants. In LSOM, three kinds of neurons exist: worker neurons, lazy neurons and indecisive neurons. We apply LSOM to various input data set and confirm that LSOM can obtain a more effective map reflecting the distribution state of the input data than the conventional SOM.

IEICE technical report. Nonlinear problems  2008/01
This study proposes a Batch-Learning Self-Organizing Map with False-Neighbor degree between neurons (called BL-FNSOM). False-neighbor degrees are allocated between adjacent rows and adjacent columns of BL-FNSOM. The initial values of all of the false-neighbor degrees are set to zero, however, they are increased with learning, and the false-neighbor degrees act as a burden of the distance between map nodes when the weight vectors of neurons are updated. BL-FNSOM changes the neighborhood relationship more flexibly according to the situation and the shape of data although using batch learning. We apply BL-FNSOM to some input data and confirm that FN-SOM can obtain a more effective map reflecting the distribution state of input data than the conventional Batch-Learning SOM.

In TN-NG, all neurons learn according to own character at each learning. The other method is the Neural Gas Containing Two Kinds of Update Functions (called TF-NG). In TF-NG, all neurons learn according to winner's character at each learning. The behavior of TN-NG and TF-NG is investigated with computer simulation. We confirm that TN-NG and TF-NG can obtain the more effective learning results than the conventional Neural Gas.

The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is an unsupervised neural network introduced by Kohonen and is a model simplifying self-organization process of the brain. However, SOM is still far away from the realization of the brain mechanism. In order to realize more powerful and more flexible mechanism, it is important to propose new models of the brain mechanism and to investigate their behaviors. In this study, as the first step to realize a new nonlinear spring model of SOM, we propose a simple one dimensional 2-neuron model connected by a nonlinear spring. We investigate its behavior under a simple assumption where input vectors are given to the model periodically. Furthermore, in order to investigate the behavior of the nonlinear spring model of SOM, we calculate one-parameter bifurcation diagram and the largest Lyapunov exponent of the proposed model. Computer simulated results show that the neurons oscillate chaotically.

Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) is an unsupervised neural network based on competitive learning which is capable of automatically finding categories and creating new ones. Fuzzy ART is a variation of ART, allows both binary and continuous input pattern. Fuzzy ART has limits of category space size by the vigilance parameter. Thus, input data are classified in each appropriate category. However, Fuzzy ART often makes input data of the common categories classify several categories. In this study, we propose an additional step, called "Group Learning", for Fuzzy ART in order to obtain more effective categorization. This algorithm is called Fuzzy ART with Group Learning (Fuzzy ART-GL). The important feature of group learning is that creating a connection between similar categories. We investigate the behavior of Fuzzy ART-GL with application to the recognition problems.

The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is unsupervised neural network introduced by Teubo Kohonen. One of the most attractive applications of SOM is data visualization. In the previous study, we have proposed a new type of SOM algorithm, which is called Shooting SOM (SSOM) algorithm. The important feature of SSOM is that the neurons move like aiming at a target, namely, only some neurons near the cluster move toward the cluster to hit the area where input data are concentrated and 1-neighborhood neurons of the winner neuron get away a fraction of an inch from the cluster. Because of this feature, SSOM tends to self-organize each cluster along the figure of each cluster. We investigate the behavior of SSOM and apply SSOM to data visualization problems.

In the real world, it is not always true that the next-door house is close to my house, in other words, "neighbors" are not always "true neighbors". In this study, we propose a new Self-Organizing Map (SOM) algorithm which considers the False Neighboring Neuron (called FNN-SOM). The FNN-SOM self-organizes with considering the real neighboring relation. The behavior of FNN-SOM is investigated with learning for various input data. We confirm that we can obtain the more effective map reflecting the distribution state of input data than the conventional SOM.

In this study, we try to implant chaotic features into the learning algorithm of self-organizing map. We call this concept as Chaotic SOM (CHAOSOM). As a first step to realize CHAOSOM, we consider the case that learning rate and neighboring coefficient of SOM are refreshed by chaotic pulses generated by the Hodgkin-Huxley equation. We apply the CHAOSOM to solve a traveling salesman problem and confirm that the chaotic feature improves the performance.

The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is unsupervised neural network introduced by Teubo Kohonen. SOM attracts attentions for clustering in these years. In this study, we propose the Fatigable SOM (FSOM) algorithm. The neurons of ESOM are fatigable, namely, the neurons which have become a winner can not become a winner during a certain period of time. FSOM self-organizes only cluster of the input data which includes a lot of noises. The behaviors of FSOM are investigated with applications to clustering the input data including a lot of noises. We can see that FSOM successfully extracts only cluster.

In order to analyze nonlinear time series, the embedding is very important. In the embedding process, we must determine the appropriate embedding dimension with time-delay to reconstruct attractors. In this study, we propose a method to estimate the embedding dimension using Self-Organizing Map (SOM). We can obtain the map reflecting the distribution state of input data using SOM. We carry out simulations for the time series obtained from the Henon map, the Ikeda map, and the Lorenz equations, and confirm that our method is useful to estimate the appropriate embedding dimensions.

The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) attracts attentions for clustering in these years. In our past study, we have proposed a method using simultaneously two kinds of SOMs whose features are different, namely, one self-organizes the area on which input data are concentrated, and the other self-organizes the whole of the input space. Further, we have applied this method to clustering of data including a lot of noises and have confirmed the efficiency. However, in order to obtain an efficient clustering performance using this method, we must determine the appropriate number of the SOMs used in the method. In this study, we propose the Peace Self-Organizing Map (PSOM) algorithm which possesses both competing and accommodating abilities. The competing and the accommodating behaviors of PSOM are investigated with applications to clustering input data including a lot of noises. We can see that PSOM successfully extracts clusters even in the case that we do not know the number of clusters in advance.

The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is an unsupervised neural network introduced in the 80's by Teuvo Kohonen. In this study, we propose a method of using simultaneously two kinds of SOMs whose features are different. Namely, one is distributed in the area on which input data are concentrated, and the other self-organizes the whole of the input space. The competing behavior of the two kinds of SOMs for nonuniform input data is investigated. Furthermore, we show its application to clustering and confirm the efficiency by comparing with the k-means method.

This paper proposes a bifurcation point detection strategy based on nested layer particle swarm optimization (NLPSO). The NLPSO is performed by two particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms with a nesting structure. The proposed method is tested in detection experiments of local bifurcation points in discrete-time dynamical systems. The proposed method directly detected the parameters of period doubling bifurcation and saddle-node bifurcation in both discrete-time and continuous dynamical systems, regardless of the stability of the periodic point, but require no careful initialization, exact calculation or Lyapunov exponents. Moreover, the proposed method is an effective detection technique in terms of accuracy, robustness usability, and convergence speed.
