Monitoring of dry vegetation is crucial in environmental management such as assessments of wind erosion risk, livestock forage, and fire risk. In arid and semi-arid regions, wind erosion has severe environmental and socioeconomic consequences. As one of the most important influencing factors for wind erosion and the dust emission it causes, vegetation fraction cover affects threshold friction velocity for sand saltation, which is determined by roughness density. However, there has been little research into estimating the coverage and mass of dry (non-photosynthetic) vegetation.
In our study area at Tsogt-Ovoo (TsO) in the northern Gobi Desert, Mongolia, we investigated the suitability of MODIS data to estimate dry vegetation cover and mass. We compared observed dry vegetation cover (VCd_obs) and mass (Md_obs) with values estimated from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and six other potential Short Wavelength InfraRed (SWIR) dry vegetation indices. Of the seven vegetation indices, the Soil Tillage Index (STI), which is calculated from the ratio of SWIR bands 6 and 7, provided good estimates of VCd_obs and Md_obs.
To verify those estimates, we obtained roughness lengths and threshold friction velocities from field observations of sand saltation, wind speed, and wind direction at stony and non-stony sites in our study area. We compared roughness length (z0) and threshold friction velocity (u∗t) for sand saltation with dry vegetation cover determined from STI. At both sites, the observed roughness length and threshold friction velocity increased with increasing dry vegetation cover estimated from STI. Based on their relationships with STI, we predicted values of z0 and u∗t in the absence of dry vegetation that were in accordance with published data. The threshold wind speeds at 10 m height derived from u∗t at both the stony and non-stony sites were reasonably close to the value that is commonly used in dust models. Thus, we verified that STI is a suitable index for estimation of dry vegetation cover and mass in the Gobi Desert and, potentially, in other arid and semi-arid regions. The STI-based monitoring of dry vegetation will improve wind erosion risk assessment.

AGU Fall Meeting 2021 2021/12 New Orleans American Geophysical Union (AGU)
Non-erodible elements such as stones and vegetation are key to controlling the sand transport and dust emission in drylands. Stony deserts are widely distributed in the Gobi Desert, but the effect of stones on wind erosion and dust emission have not been well studied, except under artificial conditions. In this study, we evaluated that effect by measuring the sand saltation threshold in a stony desert in Tsogt-Ovoo in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia, under natural surface conditions during sand and dust storms. We quantified the amount of stones by measuring the roughness density, and determined the threshold friction velocity for sand saltation by measuring wind speed and sand saltation count.
Our results showed that the threshold friction velocity increased with the roughness density of stones. In the northern part of the study area, where neither a surface crust nor vegetation was observed, the roughness density of stones was 0.00 in a topographic depression (TD), 0.05 on a northern slope (N.SL), and 0.16 on the northern mountain (N.MT). The mean threshold friction velocity values were 0.23, 0.41, and 0.57 m/s at the TD, N.SL, and N.MT sites, respectively. In the southern part of the study area, the roughness density values of stones were 0.00 and 0.07–0.32 at the TD and southern slope sites, respectively, and the mean threshold friction velocities were 0.23 and 0.45–0.71 m/s, respectively. We further compared the observed threshold friction velocities with simulated threshold friction velocities using Raupach's theoretical roughness correction and the measured roughness density values, and found that Raupach's roughness correction worked very well in the simulation of threshold friction velocity in the stony desert. The simulation results of this study also showed that to reasonably simulate sand saltation in the Gobi Desert, it is essential to consider the effects of vegetation and crust as well as the effect of stones. The previous three-dimensional dust models studies employing a constant roughness density values of 0.002 and λs=0.020 consistently underestimated the threshold friction velocity at the sites on slopes and mountains.
Our survey was conducted in only one small area in the vast Gobi Desert, our results suggest that if roughness density of stones over a wide area can be obtained, the roughness correction for the stone effect in the model of roughness correction can be applied in the three-dimensional dust models.

In this study we developed a new method to provide long term perspectives of urban growth and quality of urban life in global 3600 cities during 21st century under the environment and resource constraints. Based on this developed method, we analyzed the impacts of population and economic growth, technology progress, and climate change on urban activities and its difference between regions. This study represented the interaction between urban activities and global environment through the basic resources like water and land, and assessed its impact on the urban quality of life over the global cities. The findings of this study can be referable in wide range of policy studies like regional development and climate change. This study would contribute to progress of studies in the combined field of urban and transport planning, hydrology, environmental system and public policies.

Development of a land surface - dust emission process model based on a detailed observation in the Gobi Desert
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science:Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B)
We have conducted field experiments for an elucidation of dust emission mechanisms in Tsogt-Ovoo, Mongolia in the Gobi Desert. There is a 10 km-scale topographic depression, which works as a dust source. The source has been created by an accumulation of fine soil particles due to water erosion. When a precipitation amount is high, precipitation water gathers into the depression. It leads to a soil crust creation and a vegetation growth. We clarified that these suppress dust emission (crust effect and dead leave effect). A spatial difference in the pebble amount causes a spatial difference in dust emission (pebble effect). We quantitatively clarified the pebble effect by a numerical experiment, in which pebble amount data obtained from our field observation was applied. We also clarified a relation between soil moisture and hardness of soil crust.

Nutrient decrease in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, was investigated. We try to find out the reason of the nutrients decrease and we found the importance of nutrient release from the bottom sediments as nutrient source in the Harima-Nada and Bisan-strait, Seto Inland Sea, Japan. Moreover, we examined about the measurement and prediction methods. Also, we focused on the nutrient loading from the land and we conducted the measurements of nitrogen and phosphorous concentrations of river water. Moreover, the response of phytoplankton assemblage to the decrease is discussed, because the phytoplankton is the primary producer of a marine ecosystem and supports that. The decompositions of organic matter originated from the diatoms were tested and the nutrient release was discussed with tracing the N:P:Si ratio and predicted the change of phytoplankton assemblage.

Understanding of the atmospheric deposition, diffusion processes and land atmospheric interaction of radioactive materials
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science:Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas (Research in a proposed research area)
Initial radioactive Cs release revealed for the first time that insoluble coarse spherical particles with a diameter of several μm existed in addition to the water-soluble submicron particles usually assumed.
In typical Satoyama area, the Cs concentration derived from resuspension escalated in the summer and was low in the winter, unlike in urban areas. We discovered for the first time that Cs carrier in summer is mostly of biological.
We developed a simplified scheme for resuspension of radioactive Cs, and we carried out flux quantification - budget calculation, including resuspension by biological particles from forest ecosystems using a regional aerosol transport model, and primary leakage continued from the accident site. As a result, similarly to other processes, it was found that resuspension contributes little to decrease and migration of Cs deposited on the earth's surface.

I carried out the river water sampling and chemical analysis in the Sea of Harima-Nada river basin every month and was able to clarify the nutrient characteristics. In addition, I made a generation load analysis using Geographic Information System (GIS) and was able to calculate the generation loads from household and land. Using this result, I showed a reduction effect of the generation load in consideration of a sewerage development area and clarified necessary sewerage treatment efficiency to return the load to the quantity of load in around 1985 when fishery production was the largest. In addition, using an economic evaluation model, I was able to calculate the most suitable risk to evade red tide outbreak and bleach of Nori by comparison of the long-term change of fishery production with the number of outbreak of the red tide.

The reason of the nutrient decrease of the Seto Inland Sea and its management
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science:Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B)
The nutrient decrease in the Seto Inland Sea. During high economic growth since the 1960s, the Seto Inland Sea became heavily eutrophicated. However, the total nitrogen (TN) and phosphorous (TP) loads decreased from 1990s following the enactment of the Law for Conservation of Environment of Seto Inland Sea in 1973. Nutrient concentrations also gradually decreased. Recently, Nori culture has often heavily damaged due to the lack of nutrient. One explanation for the gradual decrease of DIN concentrations from 1970 to present is fundamentally due to the law enacted by the Environmental Agency. But the reason for the recent decrease of DIN concentrations is still unknown. It was thought that the decrease of the upward nutrient flux across the overlying water-sediment interface greatly affected the water column nutrient concentrations. From the relationship between nutrient and red tide occurrence, appropriate nutrient concentration was also discussed.

We quantitatively show a large amount of river waters flow into the Harima-Nada Sea from Harima area(Honsyu Island side) as compared with the Shikoku and Awaji Islands sides. The river waters have strong influence on the nutrient concentration in the sea. Especially, a short-term river runoff during a flood has a large influence. It is clarified that the difference of river water spread in the north side of the Sea of Harima and the south side and the effects of short-term river flood inflow are important to understand the water environment in the Harima-Nada Sea. We suggest the possibility that the change and variation of river water chemistry and discharge is one of factor to the recent decrease of nutrients in Harima-Nada Sea.

Observation, analysis and model interactive study for the understanding of global dust dynamical processes.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science:Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A)
Development of global dust model that can evaluate a dust impact on the climate was made from (1) monitoring of dust emission processes, (2) analysis on dust transport processes using Lidar data, (3) network monitoring of dust wet and dry depositions, and (4) development of new data assimilation system for the model. The results were summarized as follows ; (1) size resolved monitoring of dust emission was developed and was used for the validation of dust emission schemes, (2) long-range and high altitude transport characteristics of Asian dust was revealed by the lidar observation and it is shown that the change of the shape accompanied with the internal mixture is more important than the change of size distribution during the long-range transportation, (3) validation and improvement of dust particle size distribution and dust emission processes of MASINGAR, a global dust model, were done using wet and dry deposition data, and (4) Model error estimation was made by the dust data assimilation system using EnKF technique and satellite lidar data and the model representation of dust distribution was improved by this system. As a result, we could improve the global dust model for its representation of emission, transportation and deposition processes.

For understanding wind erosion process, we have made an intensive observation (IOP) in Australia Using this data, we compared and validated a heterogeneous saltation theory and made a quantitative discussion about saltation flux, including its size distribution and vertical profile, threshold friction velocity, and relation to soil surface moisture and soil structure. We also conducted a comparison experiment with newly developed sand particle counter and Sensit.
Intensive observation was conducted on the fallow wheat field at southeastern part of Australia during period 23 Feb. to 13 march in 2006. We have monitored 12 dust event during IOP and results were summarized as follows;
1) Saltation flux and its time variation, size distribution, and vertical structure were obtained. During IOP, one big event and 11 small events occurred and one big event amount for the most part of the total saltation flux during IOP.
2) The size distribution of saltation shows 2-peaks, one is coarse mode with maximum at 200 micron meters and the other with maximum of 80 micron meters. This confirmed the presence of two phase of saltation mode that shads heterogeneous saltation theory predicted. The finer mode is due to exponential profile of fine sand particle and the coarser mode is due to logarithmic profile of coarse sand particle.
3) We can determined saltation threshold friction velocity with objective analysis of SPC data. The results show that the size dependence of threshold friction velocity is not found.
4) We have monitored the suppression of dust emission flux due to formation of weak crust at the ground surface formed by weak precipitation.
5) We have compared saltation fluxes measured by SPC and Sensit under different wind speed in the field type wind tunnel The SPC indicate good linearity with increase of wind speed. On the other hand, Sensit data shws decrease of flux with increase of wind speed when wind speed is high. This will be due to the coincident loss of collision signal when the particle number which collide with Sensit, exceed some limit value. For this, SPC will be more available for monitoring strong dust event.

Nitrogen migration analysis in the Yamato river using nitrogen stable isotope

The BOD value of the Yamato River is the highest of all the Japanese first class rivers. Water chemistries along the Yamato River were investigated intensively to improve water quality. As a result, seasonal concentrations of BOD and NH_4^+-N derived from domestic sewage were high in winter and low in summer. The concentrations decreased with an increase in water temperature.
The general finding was that river water contains organic compounds and Cl^- derived from domestic sewage, and Cl^- was quite stable in rivers. As the ratios of BOD/Cl^- decreased down the river and changed seasonally, organic compounds were thought to be decomposed during flow. NO_3^- which organic compounds were finally decomposed into, also decreased further down the river, and were high in winter and low in summer. NO_3^--N is thought to be used for photosynthesis because pH, DO, δ^<15>N values and chlorophyll concentration of the Yamato River increased with temperature and decrease of NO_3^--N concentration. Therefore, organic compounds are decomposed into NO_3^- intensively in summer and plants along the Yamato River absorb NO_3^- and then the BOD value in summer becomes low. Hence, natural remediation for the Yamato River reduces BOD value in summer. Organic compounds in sewage are decomposed in private sewage systems and naturally in rivers in the Yamato River catchment.
As both decomposition systems depend on temperature, the BOD value in winter is thought to be high. As sewage disposal plants are large scale, the system can keep high temperature and the quality of the final effluent can be controlled. Therefore, the BOD value of Yamato River decreases annually as some new sewage disposal plants are built in the branches of the Yamato River, although the BOD value of Yamato River is the highest of any Japanese first class river. It is important to change private sewage systems into large scale disposal plants, to improving water quality.

We measured oxygen stable isotope ratios (δ ^<18>O) of surface water in Kii Peninsula, and showed their spatial distribution. As a result, the enriched δ ^<18>O composition of surface waters were distributed in the southeast area and the depleted δ ^<18>O composition of surface waters were distributed in the inland area where the altitude was high (>1000 m). In order to understand the spatial distribution of δ ^<18>O composition of surface water, rainfall characteristics were considered as well as topographic effect. We classified the rainfall characteristics with three zones using a ratio of the total number that means how many times precipitation was simultaneously observed between AMeDAS observation stations: 1)the east and southeast area (zone A), 2)the southwest area (zone B), 3)the northwest area (zone C). From the correlation analysis between δ ^<18>O and topographic data, we can find that the zoning effects on the topographic effect, especially in a meso-scale area. Our observation result shows that the δ ^<18>O composition of surface water was enriched in high precipitation area. This result does not correspond to the isotopic amount effect. We think this reasons that continuous vapor supply from the sea keeps δ ^<18>O composition of rain clouds enriched.

Our observation result shows that the δ ^<18>O composition of surface water was enriched in high precipitation area. This result does not correspond to the isotopic amount effect. We think this reasons that continuous vapor supply from the sea keeps δ ^<18>O composition of rain clouds enriched.
