    Raindrops and dirt adhere to the lens surface of a surveillance camera. The fingerprint sticks to the touch screen of the smartphone. These are problems because they deteriorate visibility. The surface of the photovoltaic panel gets dirty with dust. It is a problem because the power generation efficiency decreases. In order to solve these problems, we developed a super water-repellent and highly transparent base material with both translucency and antifouling functions. By combining a fine rugged surface structure (100 nanometers in thickness) and a chemisorbed monolayer (one nanometer in thickness) having a water-repellent functional site, a super water-repellent and highly transparent substrate having translucency and super water-repellency (150 degree or more) was developed.

    One problem with outdoor-mounted solar panels is that power generation efficiency is reduced by face plate dirt; a problem with electronic touch panels is the deterioration of screen visibility caused by finger grease stains. To solve these problems, we should fabricate antifouling surfaces which have superhydrophobic and oil-repellent properties without spoiling the transparency of the transparent substrate. In this study, an antifouling surface with both superhydrophobicity and oil-repellency was fabricated on a glass substrate by forming a fractal microstructure. The fractal microstructure was constituted of transparent silica particles 100 nm in diameter and transparent ZnO columns grown on silica particles through atmospheric pressure cold plasma deposition; the sample surface was coated with a chemically adsorbed monomolecular layer. Samples were obtained which had a superhydrophobic property (water droplet contact angle; 150º) and a high average transmittance of about 90 %.

    Transparent conductive thin films used for a liquid crystal display or a solar cell etc. have to fabricated in large area with low cost system. Therefore, I generated coldplasma under atmospheric pressure, and developed the deposition system of Zinc oxide films. For fabricating thin films uniformly in large area, slit width was expanded into 100 mm. The uniform films were fabricated. The subject remained about improvement in deposition rate.

    Because fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) have very sharp, narrow-band reflection spectra, they are well suited to applications involving narrow-band optical signals, such as optical filters in optical telecommunication systems, fiber laser cavities, and various types of fiber sensors. There, the effective apodization techniques are ever strongly desired for spectrum shaping such as suppressing side-lobes. We have developed novel technique of the apodization using two-beam interference method that controls the angle of mirror reflection by very small amount in step-wise or continuously during the time of the FBG formation by UV laser irradiation, which consequently forms superposition of FBGs of slightly different grating period and hence achieves the apodization. Experiments by two-step control of the minor angle have demonstrated very clear spectrum shaping in suppressing side-lobes. Thus the new technique appears to provide very powerful apodization technique for the FBG fabrication. We have published the result to Japanese Journal of Applied Physics about our novel technique on two-beam interference method of FBG fabrication, to oral presentation to the conference of Japanese Applied Physics Society, and Japanese Journal of Optics about the new technique of apodization.

    We have shown that the zinc oxide thin film of the high quality can be made by using the atmospheric pressure low temperature plasma to which the thin film preparation can be done by open air. To speed up the film deposition speed, the optimization of the slit configuration was examined. The deposition region has increased when the number of slits (1mm×20mm) is increased from one to two. However, the gas flow becomes unstable, and the uniformity of the film has worsened. Moreover, the deposition speed that the grain size of the zinc oxide thin film becomes 40nm or more has increased by a factor of about 1.3. Next, to expand the film deposition region with the uniformity of the film had been kept, the slit of the taper was examined. The thin film was made by using the slit of the taper of 1.6mm in width on the gas exit side. In this case, the width of deposition region of the thin film has extended only to about 1.1 times compared with the slit of the width of 1mm. Moreover, the deposition speed that the grain size of the zinc oxide thin film becomes 40nm or more has hardly changed. In addition, film production was done by using the slit of the taper that expanded the slit width on the gas exit side up to 3mm. In this case, the width of deposition region of the thin film has increased by a factor of 1.9. In addition, the grain size of the zinc oxide thin film was about 40nm in the range at the made film, deposition rate in any film. The film deposition rate at which the grain size of 40nm was kept became twice or more compared with the slit of the width of 1mm. However, the crystal that was orientated to (101) in addition to the crystal that was orientated to (002) in the made film when the slit width on the gas exit side was widened. Therefore, the slit made a taper has understood it is a effective configuration in the speed-up of film production. Moreover, when the film with good orientation property is needed, it is necessary to examine the film condition etc. further.
  • Experimental Study of Thermal Decay of Fiber Bragg Grating and its Theoretical Modeling of Arrhenius Analysis

    Optical spectrum of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) produced from hydrogen-loaded optical fiber is well known to evolve over a wide range after its fabrication by exposing to UV laser, that is, thermal decay. The purposes of this research are (1) to stabilize the optical spectrum by annealing thermal treatment so that the wavelength and reflectivity of the FBG do not vary at all, and (2) to understand the physics reason of the thermal decay. We have achieved following three major results. (1)We have proved that the evolution of short-period FBG wavelength after its fabrication is dominantly defined by out-diffusion of hydrogen molecules from the optical fiber. Quantitative agreement has been obtained with theoretical calculation of hydrogen diffusion in silica glass of the optical fiber. (2)In long-period FBG, the wavelength goes through a large upswing ranging over several tens to 100 nm and transmission minimum becomes deeper after its fabrication. Using theory of hydrogen diffusion and computer FBG simulation, we have revealed that the spectrum evolution is caused by quenching and re-filling of the hydrogen in the fiber core. The hydrogen in the core is dissociated by UV irradiation into atoms, and some H-atoms react with doped Ge in the fiber core forming Ge-OH bond and others return back to molecules by simple recombination, that is, the hydrogen is depleted in the fiber core, i.e. quenching. Then the surrounding cladding of the fiber supplies hydrogen to the core, i.e. re-filling. We have demonstrated that the spectrum evolution can be all explained by the quenching and re-filling. (3)Erdogan's theory has been extensively used for the analysis of thermal decay process of the short-period FBGs. To the best of our knowledge, no attempt has ever been made to apply the theory to long-period FBGs. Using the above result about the spectrum evolution by hydrogen quenching and re-filling, we have succeeded in applying the Erdgan's theory to long-period FBGs. We have published the first result to Journal of Lightwave Technology, and we have completed submitting our second result to Applied Optics. For the third result, we plan to publish soon.

    近年,情報化の波が中小企業並びに家庭までおよんでいる。このような中で出力装置の分野においては,出力品質が良く,低騒音かつ高速での出力が可能であることから電子写真複写機が有望視されている。ところが,その中心となる感光体ドラムは機能上,小型化が困難であることから新しい感光体材料の開発が望まれる。 そこで本研究では,ドラムの基板材料として透明でフレキシブルな高分子フィルムを用い,低温で透明導電性薄膜(ITO膜)を蒸着し,その上に感光体材料を付け感光体ドラムとすることで,小型化・薄型化可能な新しい材料を開発することを目的とした。 基板材料とする高分子フィルムは熱に弱いことから,その基板上に透明導電性薄膜および感光体材料の多層構造薄膜を作製するには低温成膜技術が必要となる。本校現有のイオンビームスパッタリング装置が薄膜材料のスパッタに用いるプラズマの発生部が薄膜製造室と隔たる特徴から高分子フィルム基板の温度上昇を抑えた低温成膜が期待できる。そこで,その装置を用いて以下の研究実績を得た。(1)現有のイオンビームスパッタリング装置を,ITO膜の低温成膜用に改良した。(2)イオンビームガンの条件を制御するシステムを作製した。(3)イオンビームガンの条件を変化したITO膜の低温成膜実験を行った。(4)ITO膜の機能性の評価として透過率・抵抗率を測定した。(5)X線回折測定による原子構造の評価,AES測定による組成分析を行った。以上の結果より,低温成膜の最適条件を見つけることができ,電子写真複写機における感光体フィルムベルトの開発が期待できる。
  • Preparation and Properties of Thin Film by Plasma-Assisted CVD for CO_2 Laser Lens

    1. Preparation of KC1 and NaC1 crystals. The growth of KC1 crystals, 80phix70mm, was carried on from the liquid by Automatic pull-up device TK-P1. The growth temperature was controlled as follows : Also, Nac1 crystal was formed on the same method. 2. Fabrication of lens. The crystals were polished with the abrasives (Water, Liquid paraffin, Ethyl alcohol, Carborundum #500, 800, 1200, and Alumina 0.05 mu) and the dishes to form the lens of 5o and 60 mm focal distances, 60 and 70 mm in diameter, and 28 and 32mm in thickness. 3. Thin film coating. Thin films on the surface of crystals were prepared better by PVD than plasma-assisted CVD to preserve the crystal lens from deliquescence and breakdown. The transmittance of film-coated lens was measured at 10.6mum in wavelength as follows : 4.0.80-1.0mm of a hole was bored at high speed in the planks such as melapi wood and polyvinyl chlor using 17.5W cw CO_2 laser device (Assit gas N_2 : 2Kg/cm^2, XY-table speed : 300mm/s) with KC1//LiF lens. It is found that the present KC1//LiF can be employed instead of zinc selenide CO_2 lasers lens.
