Title
Development of information needs questionnaire for cancer patients
a)Background and Objectives
As the number of cancer patients living a social life while continuing treatment is rapidly increasing, creating an environment where they can access accurate information is a challenge for medical professionals, patients, and their families. In this study, we developed an information needs questionnaire for cancer patients and tested its reliability and validity.
b)Methods
The research method is quantitative descriptive method. We created 20 questions based on the literature review. The target audience is people over the age of 20 who belong to a cancer patient association in Chugoku and Shikoku, have been diagnosed with cancer, and have undergone treatment. The questionnaire used in the survey was ① the “Information Needs Questionnaire, ② Mental Health (GHQ-12), ③ Health-related QOL (SF-8). The data collection method was by mail. This study was conducted after applying to the Ethics Committee of the Kagawa University School of Medicine and obtaining approval under reception number 2022-063. A written promise was made to respect the free will of the patient.
c)Results
A total of 581 copies of the questionnaire were sent to the 21 organizations that had given their consent, and 168 copies were returned. The response rate was 28.9%, and the effective response rate was 86.9% (146 copies). The obtained data were analyzed using statistical software (SPSS28.0, AMOS29). The Information Needs Questionnaire for Cancer Patients had 17 items. The four sub-factors were [information to reduce deterioration and empower recovery], [information for prevention and continuing medical treatment], [information to utilize social resources for treatment], and [information to resolve questions]. Regarding reliability, Cronbach'α for the total score was 0.93.
d)Conclusions
The “Cancer Patients' Information Needs Questionnaire” has internal consistency for reliability, and construct validity and concurrent validity through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis.
