    In order to carry out research on tunable ultrafast THz switch by hybridization of metamaterial and one-dimensional photonic crystal, we studied the following element technologies. First, a THz metamaterials such as a cut wire or an electric split ring resonator was fabricated on a semiconductor substrate, and their optical properties were evaluated. Next, broadband high intensity THz wave generation from air was carried out by dichroic laser induced plasma method. Finally, we analyzed the resonance characteristics of Fabry - Perot microcavity using wire grid and found that mode splitting occurs when metamaterial is introduced into the cavity. As a result, a useful wavelength variable type THz switch becomes possible.
  • Development of intense THz light source using anisotropic metamaterial

    (1)We fabricated metamaterial structure on the semiconductor substrate in THz region by photolithography technique. For example, wire grid structure acts as THz polarizer. We confirmed this phenomena by THz time-domain spectroscopy. (2)We fabricated poled polymer for THz generation by corona-poling technique. We chemically synthesized dye molecules named as LEMKE. We observed THz generation using LEMKE poled polymer film by THz time-domain spectroscopy. (3) Although we could not fabricated THz anisotropic metamaterial, we fabricated hyperbolic metamaterial in visible region as metal-dielectric multilayer structure. We confirmed broadband Purcell effect by time-resolved fluorescence measurement using several dye molecule on the metamaterial substrate.
  • Development of terahertz pump-optical probe spectroscopy system using photonic crystal

    (1) We succeeded that the enhancement of THz detection efficiency by cavity type one-dimensional photonic crystal in THz region. This is regarded as a kind of a THz pump-optical probe spectroscopy, and measurement sensitivity can be improved by a introduction of photonic crystal.(2) We fabricated one-dimensional photonic crystal in visible region using spin-coating and we observed a cavity polariton in this structure.(3) We successfully observed that narrow-band and fast THz transmittance modulation effect by optical pump-THz probe spectroscopy.
  • Development of bright THz emitter using doubly resonant one-dimensional photonic crystal in near and far infrared region

    The aim of this project is development of bright THz emitter using doubly resonant one-dimensional photonic crystal in near and far infrared region. We performed several investigations in order to archive our aim as below. 1. Fabrication of THz one dimensional photonic crystal (1D-PC) structures THz time domain spectroscopy system using femtosecond pulse laser system was constructed in order to measure THz 1D-PC. We fabricated 1D-PC made of organic polymers or semiconductor substrates by simple stacking. We successfully observed photonic band gap or photon localized mode in THz region in transmission spectra of 1D-PC made of organic polymers or semiconductor substrates. 2. Enhancement of THz generation in 1D-PC in near and far infrared region We fabricated the cavity type THz 1 D-PC with a ZnTe crystal in order to amplify the THz light. Unfortunately we observed the poor enhancement effect using THz 1D-PC because of the reduction of incident pulses intensity at the each surfaces of layers. In order to avoid this problem, we put anti-reflection multi-layer coatings for infrared excitation light using two kinds of the organic polymers on the polypropylene films. As a result, we observed 1.5 times larger THz amplitude in the THz 1D-PC with anti-reflection coatings compared with the ZnTe crystal at several specific frequencies. 3. Optical properties of GaNAs super lattice We paid attention to GaNAs quantum nano-structures as future photoconductive antenna for THz generation. The structures were grown by modulated N radical beam sequence of RF-MBE which we were developed. In this project, we investigated structural properties and optical properties in near infrared region.
