This study was conducted to develop the assessments of executive functions and the assessment-based intervention methods for children with specific learning difficulties. In experimental study, we investigated the cognitive functions underlying the Verbal Fluency Test and the Trail Making Test by behavioral indices and physiological indices by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). On both tests, the significant enhancement of prefrontal activity on NIRS was observed during the task performing period. On the Verbal Fluency Test, we confirmed the phenomenon of rapid reduction of retrieval efficiency, which was suggested the possibility that shifting functions contribute the releasing retrieval inhibition on the long-term memory scanning. In practical study, we provided the individualized interventions for children with learning difficulties, which were underlined on compensating children’s executive function difficulties. The effects of these intervention methods were practically verified.

Very low birth weight (VLBW) children often have learning difficulties. We aimed to clarify the characteristics of cognitive function in VLBW children. We conducted Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC), Bender Gestalt Test (BGT) and global/local visual cognitive tasks for the VLBW children aged 5 to 10 years who had no abnormality on brain MRI and no neurological abnormalities. The results of K-ABC revealed remarkably low “Achievement Scales”. In the BGT and the global graphic tasks, the VLBW children recognized developmental delay of visual-motor perception compared to the term-born children. Among the VLBW children, the eye tracker showed children with problems in eye movement suggesting a relationship with learning difficulties.

  • Assessment of executive functions for children with developmental disorders : Using behavioral and physiological measures

The aim of this study was to investigate the nature of executive functions on verbal fluency task in healthy adults, typically developing children, and children with developmental disorders. Verbal fluency task is one of the most widely employed neuropsychological tests in clinical and experimental examinations of cognitive function. Typically, participants are asked to generate orally as many words as possible beginning with a given letter (e.g., F) or of a given category (e.g., animals) within a limited time period. We adopted phonological verbal fluency task known to be sensitive to executive functions and frontal lobe functions. In Study I for healthy adults, we examined the vocabulary-size effect by using "easy" and "hard" letters and retrieval efficacy as a function of time. We obtained two behavioral measures in verbal fluency test (total number of recalled items and change of retrieval rate in time), and obtained two physiological indices (P3 amplitude and latency from auditory oddball paradigm in event-related potentials). Significant negative correlation between change of retrieval rate in time and frontal P3 amplitude was found. It supports the assumption that change of retrieval rate in time during verbal fluency task adequately reflects executive functions and frontal lobe functions. In Study II for children with developmental disorders, change of retrieval rate in time was related with level of general intelligence. In Study III for typically developing children in the lower grades of elementary school, it can be prove that the shift patterns of retrieval rate in time were different as their grade level.
  • A Fundamental Study on the Teaching Method of Handwriting for Children with Disabilities

In children who exist in early stages of handwriting learning, wrong letters are frequently observed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the writing features of the children with writing difficulty and to try to make the remediation program of handwriting for them. Moreover, we found many children who didn't show the motive of the handwriting learning in the study process, then the support plan for those children was also examined. The results of this study were made public in Second International Luria Memorial Conference (Moscow) and Japanese Association of Special Education, etc. The following contents were examined at this study period. 1.The consideration matters in teaching handwriting in the elementary school were examined. 2.The acquisition process of the function to self-correct wrong letters was examined in children with mental retardation. 3.The supporting method that had children with mental retardation use the learned letters in their life was examined. 4.The role of the visual function in handwriting was examined in children with visual impairment.
  • The study of assessment of auditory and phonological short-term memory in children with developmental disabilities.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science:Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C)

The purpose of this study was to consider the clinical utility of P3(P300) event-related potential component and nonword repetition task as measures of auditory and phonological short-term memory(STM). It has been difficult to apply P3 measurement to the individuals who are unable to reach the required performances. To overcome this difficulty, we determined a measurement procedure without intentional discrimination tasks in normal adults. Next, this procedure was carried out to 60 children with intellectual disabilities. The P3 component during the auditory oddball paradigm of a passive condition(no task) was compared with the P3 during an active condition. P3 were recorded from the subjects under the passive and/or the active(if possible). In the passive, P3 amplitude and latency were generally equivalent to those of the normal controls. However, in contrast to the controls, they did not show P3 enhancement by task-induced attention to the infrequent target in the active. These findings suggest that automatic processes to detect an infrequent event are intact, but executive controls are poor in the subjects. These results could be used as normative data in clinical practices, and P3 in the passive procedure can provide a useful index in the populations in which an active discrimination task cannot be performed. Nonword repetition task has been proposed as a reliable means of phonological short-term memory and also predictive of the ability to learn new lexical items. We investigated whether nonword repetition test could be of diagnostic significance for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Eight out of 66 subjects showed the tendency to reduce the proportion of correct repetition for increasing nonword length. They were highly involved in subjects with Down syndrome. These findings suggest that some persons with intellectual disabilities have limited phonological STM skills, and that their poor repetition is independent of intellectual levels.

Some children who are learning to write Japanese letters 'Hiragana' demonstrate learning difficulties. The reasons are the developmental delay of cognitive function, motor function, corrective function of own writing errors and so on. The purpose of this study was to investigate the writing features of the children with writing difficulty and try to make the remediation program of handwriting for them. The research of this period involved two kinds of studies. The first study investigated the effect of the development of expressive activity on the modulation of handwriting pressure in children. For example, draw-a-man test as an index of the development of expressive activity and the tasks of the modulation of handwriting pressure following verbal instructions were given to children. The second study investigated the role of visual information in handwriting, so we collected fundamental data on regulation of handwriting pressure following verbal instruction in children with visual impairment. From these studies we found that the further investigations were necessary for the construction of the methods to improve handwriting pressure from the viewpoint of the information by multi modalities.

  • Effects on motor functions accompanied by aging in the people with Down syndrome : Examination from a psychological side and a physiological side.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science:Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C)
    Date (from‐to) : 1996 -1998

The purpose of this study is to make clear the functional change of the actual condition of motor function and brainstem function accompanied by aging for the people with Down syndrome 50 years old generation, and to examine the characteristics through comparing with the people with intellectual disabilities other than Down syndrome. The subjects were 58 people with Down syndrome and 48 people with intellectual disabilities on the register to the senior high departments of the special education schools or institutions for intellectual disabilities. The group of intellectual disabilities was matched in CA and intellectual capabilities of the people with Down syndrome. The subjects were run individually The measurement is performed 3 times and the result was recorded. At first, the standing posture was recorded. The inspections of motor functions were grip-strength, back-strength, topping, the pachinnko ball moving by tweezers, whole body reaction time, and one-leg standing. And auditory brainstem response (ABR) was recorded. The result was as follows. 1) The height of the people with Down syndrome was remarkably inferior compared with the intellectually disabled people. However, the weight was slighfly inferior. 2) The results of the people with Down syndrome were lower than the result of people with intellectual disabilities at all inspection of motor functions, and the difference became larger in the 30 years and the 40-50 years old generations. 3) It was seen that the standing posture differed between the groups. That is, from 10 years old generation, head comes out in front, and it is slouchy to many people with Down syndrome, and sign that it had turned were observed. 4) On ABR, the latencies of III and V, and the inter-peak latency of 1-V had significant correlation with aging in the group of Down syndrome, but not in the group of intellectual disabilities.
