  • Dynamism of Corporate Governance Change: The Empirical Analysis of Outside Directors in Japanese Firms
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science:Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C)

We investigate how outside directors define their director role under institutional change using the grounded theory approach. Based the semi-structured interviews with 70 directors and executives in Japanese firms, we are able to identify some important factors that shape the outside directors’ role identity. Our findings suggest that while role identity of outside directors is quite diverse because of the role ambiguity caused by institutional change, they try to make sense of competing institutional logics influenced by executives’ sensegiving on the director role and by external expectation created by the new governance regime leading them to choose different responses. In the institutional context where agency logic has not deeply penetrated, the formation of outside directors’ role identity is subject to influences from the interactions of multiple logics and the executives’ sensegiving which aims to shape the preferred definition of the role of outside directors.

The model developed here explains the diverse exit strategies of entrepreneurs while these firms have different various stakeholder compositions and its distinctive development paths. I argue that venture survival and their career strategies are not strictly a function of economic performance but also depends on a firm’s own threshold of performance. I apply the EVL model to the study of academic venture survival, in which two thresholds of economic and social index are determined by the key stakeholders’ ownership influence such as the leading academic entrepreneurs. Utilizing four case studies, I find the some supportive evidence for the model. The findings suggest that the reason why entrepreneurs' career strategies may choose to continue or survive despite comparatively low economic performance.

This study investigates women entrepreneurs in local cities from the perspective of entrepreneurial career strategy. The findings are as follows: these entrepreneurs (1)are aware of the size and scope of the business that they can control, (2) experience some work-family conflict and are anxious about that, but regard that unavoidable, (3) understand the importance of role models and mentors, and (4) are willing to serve as such for others.
  • The multi-case studies of social entrepreneurship and local business strategy : In search of the creation mechanism of cultural business

This paper explored the creation mechanism of cultural business by conducting the multi-case studies. We suggest that, in order to utilize, circulate and create dynamic resources, it's essential for social entrepreneurs, citizens, local governments and private companies, who are embedded in each institutional specific logic, to exploit others' interests as own resources and to engage in the form of collective action. We also raise an important issue concerning the relationship between social entrepreneurs and organizations, which inevitably transforms in the case of cultural businesses as building-up process requires much longer time than other industry.

We examine the entrepreneurial activity of university researchers from the viewpoint of behavioral characteristics, venture strategy, and management issues specific to the academic spin-offs. We conduct five case studies of academic spin-off firms in bio-technology industry, focusing on the chief scientist/faculty, CEO/external entrepreneur and their relationships. We also survey managers and university researchers involved in the academic spin-offs. Our findings and explanations are as follows : -Academic entrepreneurs generally like innovation, but they tend to be slightly risk averse as to managerial decisions. When business environments are changing, the distinction between the role of a manager and that of a researcher are often blurred. For example, we can sometimes observe an over commitment to business activities by researchers. The wide and strong commitment to the company would not always lead to overall business success. -Academic spin-offs use their universities' reputation as a legitimatization strategy for building trust with the market, investors, and consumers. Universities use academic spin-offs as evidence of their active university-industry linkage and usefulness of their research output. On the other hand, using each other to legitimize their activities sometimes locks their strategic options. We propose the notion of "the range of legitimization" to clarify the bilateral relationship. This study contributes to the nascent literature dealing with the paradoxical nature of academic entrepreneurship. It also sheds light on the management of legitimacy of ventures and on innovation management.
  • The management of industry-university cooperation in regions international, comparative and empirical analysis of biotechnology industry

We have researched the early stage of cluster formation in the biotechnology industry to build new framework which will effectively help to criticize industry-university co-operation in the early stage of cluster formation and, in addition, to prove problems of policy about support and evaluation. As domestic cluster, case studies centered on rare sugar biotechnology cluster in Kagawa were made, and as cluster in foreign countries, case studies of biotechnology industry cluster in the United States and Europe were made. Those led us to point out that there are two kinds of growth, social growth (being public) and economic growth (business) in the process of cluster formation and point out that it is desirable that support and evaluation suitable for respective growth should be done. Precedent researches have proved that academic entrepreneurship by researchers at university results only in starting business, in other words, a venture starting from university. We also pointed out it results in building infrastructure which is a research base as well as starting business. Domestic cluster, in the early stage, faces difficulties in linkage between researches and business and faces difficulties in managing to be rooted in communities and to gain global competitive predominance at the same time, and faces a gap of domain between industry and university. It, however, attempts to overcome those difficulties now. Together with academic researches and business, being rooted in communities imposes a very complicated and expanded role on researchers at university who are the core of cluster. Under these circumstances, entrepreneurs are in action. In comparison with cluster in foreign countries, in domestic cluster, the function of supporting organizations is not strong because the organizations are not linked with each other well and we are short of talented people who are able to measure linkage between researches and business because the dividing line between researches and business is fixed highly, and the function of training those people is not strong. That's what this research has proved.
