    1.Dielectric, ultrasonic velocity, electrophoretic mobility, and cationic-surfactant-adsorption experiments were carried out on suspensions of montmorillonite clay exchanged with different types of counter-ions to understand the hydration, adsorption, and coagulation behaviors of the system. It was found the adsorption amount of surfactants became a maximum in a few hours after the addition and then gradually decreased approaching an equilibrium value. These results suggested that one should consider the kinetics of adsorption for the use of montmorillonite as an adsorbent to remove hydrophobic materials efficiently from waste water. 2.Emulsifying power and emulsion stability was investigated for some food proteins and sugar-based nonionic surfactants. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) could form more stable corn oil emulsions than β-lactoglobulin (β-Lg). We also confirmed that in the medium near pH 5 which closed to the iso-electric point of BSA, emulsion stabilized by BSA was quite unstable if ionic strength was below ca. 30 mM, but it became rather stable at higher ionic strength conditions. Surface tension for aqueous solutions of octylglucoside, sucrose laurate, glucose octanoate, and allose octanoate was measured as a function of concentration to get their critical micelle concentration and amount of surface excess. 3.Surface force curves between a polystyrene particle and a silica plate both immersed in cationic surfactant solutions were measured by using AFM apparatus. It was confirmed that the effect of repulsive electrical double layer force increased with surfactant concentration and there existed some kind of steric force originated from polymer molecules. Further, spectro-ellipsometry for spin-coat polystyrene thin film in aqueous solutions was performed to estimate the film thickness and water content in the film. In cationic surfactant solutions, the film thickness decreased which suggested coming off of polystyrene molecules from interface.

    (1) Reversible micelle - vesicle transition by changing pH. On protonation of oleyldimethylamine oxides to the degree of 0.5 (the half protonated state), vesicles are formed spontaneously from long fibrous micelles and this change occurs reversibly by changing the pH of the medium. The viscoelastic behavior changes from the Maxwell type characteristic to entangled network of long fibrous micelles to the gel like behavior. The conversion is rather fast and it seems to take place within 2 hours. It takes much longer time (about 14 days), however, for the viscoelastic properties of the vesicle suspension to recover to approximately the same level. The conversion most likely proceeds not in a transition like but in a continuous way. (2) Change of the structures of the films of tetradecyldimethylamine oxides (C14DMAO) at solid/solution interface. 2-1. Mica/solution interfaces, hemimicelles or cylinders are formed at nonionic state while bilayers are formed at half- and full-protonated states. 2-2. Graphite/solution interfaces. Hemimicelles are formed irrespective of the degrees of protonation. (3) Lamella and vesicle formation of C14DMAO by naphthalene sulfonate (NphS) counterions. This result is not trivial because most surfactant cations with a C16 tail form long fibrous micelles (the packing parameter p close to 0.5). In this study the surfactant cations with a C14 tail form lamella (p close to unity). 3-1. The fttll-protonated species form lamella phase on addition of NphS and this separated lamella phase can be dispersed as lamella drops or onions at high temperatures. 3-2. The half-protonated species form vesicles on addition of NphS and their charges are reversed as the binding of NphS increases.

    溶液の微少な構造変化から溶質ー溶媒相互作用を調べる為に、溶液の断熱圧縮率を温度、濃度、圧力の関数として自動測定する装置の開発を行なった。温度の検出と制御は、水晶温度計(HP2804A)とペルチエ素子を用いたPID方式により±10^<-4>℃の精度で0〜50℃の範囲の温度走査を行なうことを目標とした。また、濃度と圧力の調節には電子天秤と液体クロマト用の送液ポンプ(NPD321)を使用し、抵抗線圧力計を圧力変換器として1〜500気圧の範囲で圧力の自動走査も行なえるように設計した。断熱圧縮率は、パルスジェネレ-タ-(HP3314A)と周波数計を用い、溶液中に一定間隔で置いた二つの送信・受信用PZT圧電素子間の音波の伝播速度から計算した。本研究代表者がこれまで行なって来た±1x10^<-3>℃精度の装置よりも、加圧装置が加わって装置が大型化した為、大型のペルチエ素子を導入したが、加熱と冷却の速度が小型のものとは異なるため、調整に予想外に時間が掛かったが、いろいろ部品の改造を行なった結果、10^<-4>℃の温度精度で制御する見込みを得た。圧力の制御も、当初予定した液体クロマト用の高圧ポンプは、予想外にリ-クが大きく500気圧の維持に耐えない事が判ったので、測定セルと送液ポンプの間に空気圧作動式の遮断バルヴを挿入して、音速の測定に必要な数分の間、圧力低下を0.1気圧以内におさめる事が出来る見通しを得ることが出来た。加圧下での音速測定セルには、ステンレススティ-ル材をくり抜いた容器の両端にPZT素子のマウント台を設け、素子を固定して使用したが、水中加圧下での電気絶縁と振動子の固定法が予想と異なり、その調整に手間取ったが、振動子を圧力セルの壁に直かにエポキシ樹脂で接着することにより、音波の波形を歪ませる事も絶縁の劣化も起こさず作動出来る見通しを得た。現在、総合調整を兼ねた測定を行なっている。

    サンポート高松展示場 市民ギャラリー 日本化学会中国四国支部では1993年（平成5年）から毎年、（公財）徳山科学技術振興財団の協力を得て，主として小学生中学生を対象とした化学展を中国四国の一都市で行っています。2011年（平成２３年）には、初めて香川の地で香川化学展を開催し、その際には、たくさんの方々にご協力いただき、成功裏に終える事ができました。その後、毎年、様々な形に発展させながらサイエンス展を実施してきました。本年度は、夢化学 21 in Kagawa実行委員会主催、日本化学会中国四国支部共催、香川大学、徳島文理大学、産業技術総合研究所四国センター、香川県教育委員会、高松市教育委員会に後援いただき、サイエンス展を実施することになりました。参加の児童生徒に楽しみながらサイエンスへの素朴な疑問や好奇心を感動につなげる機会を提供するとともに、保護者・一般の方々にサイエンスに対する興味や関心を喚起し、よりよい社会について考える一助として頂きたいと願っています。
